It’s Been A While

Winter is still here near the end of March. We headed to St. Augustine the first week of March for some sun and fresh seafood. We came back to a slight melt. The snowdrops were starting to push their way through the soil. Then we had a two-day blizzard and three feet of snow. The driveway and roads are clear now but there is still snow on the ground, too deep for the snowdrops to push their way through or the daffodils or hellebores or any other spring flower. The boxwoods are slowly being uncovered.

Even though we are in the spring equinox, it is still winter here and I am still processing a season of loss I’ve been through. The loss of my dog and my horse. Two beings I bought with me to this new place from my old life. Their loss means a new way of being and I am finding my way. We’ve also experienced the loss of a family member and a friend. Two women that were too young and they will be missed.

Spring, though faintly visible here, has brought forth many blessings. We welcomed a new puppy into our home and I am a great-aunt. Two weddings are on the calendar this year. We have a trip to Scotland planned and we will be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary.

Spring is the toughest season here in the north woods. Cold and overcast and the chance of one last snowstorm. But nature is slowly springing back to life. The melting snowpack is feeding the trees and my spring plants and is filling the creeks and lakes. I see folks tapping the maples for syrup. In small ways spring is revealing herself and I am grateful.
