Winter started at Thanksgiving and hasn’t really let go. We have a few feet of snow on the ground. My gardens are buried. I’m wondering when will snowdrops come up? They are under a few feet of snow.
I’m going to have to transplant the daffodils I planted in the shade. I thought the ground would get enough sun before leaves came out. However, the daffodil leaves come up but no flowers so I’ll be transplanting this spring. I transplanted some bulbs last fall. I am waiting to see how they do in their new spot.
We top dressed most of the garden beds with manure and shavings from the barn. I’m looking forward to seeing how the health of the plants in the gardens improve and if I have worms in the soil now.
I planted garlic in the fall in various containers in the gardens. I don’t have a vegetable garden bed so I’m trying this approach. May put some raised bed in the sunniest part of the garden.
We have at least one rabbit living under the shed. I’ll need to be diligent in putting down repellent. I have many hostas in the front garden. If they get eaten I will need to compost them though I love the various shades of green they give a garden bed.
If I have the energy in early spring, there are some Russian olives I need to cut down and spray.
I planted two boxwoods in early summer. They have been completely covered in snow all winter. I’ll see if they survived. The very tippy top of a young witch hazel is poking through the snow. Hopefully it survived as well.
Right now I am just in waiting mode. I keep on exercising and practicing yoga so I don’t get too sore when I finally get in the garden. And I have a stack of gardening books to read to teach and inspire.
