Winter Pays A Visit

A winter storm blew through last night and into this morning. The snow bands have moved on though the wind is still blowing. The treetops, and sometimes the entire tree trunk, sway as the wind blows past. I can hear the wind as it makes its way through the forest to get here then blow further on.

The air was very cold as I headed out to the bird feeders. My fingertips froze even in heavy gloves. Chickadees, tufted titmouse, and nuthatches were at the feeders through the worst of it. Staying warm, I guess. I find it comforting to see the birds out in the bad weather. We must get on with our days regardless of inconvenience or hardship.

The road commission truck has just taken care of our road. The guy who plows are drive asked if we want him to come over today or tomorrow. Professionals are busy clearing trees and power lines from roadways. The people who diligently keep us safe and warm are out in the worst of it keeping us safe and warm.

Many people have used trees as metaphors about bending, not breaking. Being flexible and swaying rather than standing rigid. The trees out back have withstood past storms and this storm and they will withstand future storms. When they do break, they will provide homes and food for many creatures and fertilize the soil. Not sure what that is a metaphor for, but it is comforting.
